Plastic on the top rack came out wet whichever cycle we chose. He explained how the vent and the heated dry actually work, adjusted the rinse aid and cleaned the flap. Better, not properly solved.

The first neighbourhood over the Bridge of Lions. Filled island ground, salt air, and kitchens that were never drawn around a professional range.

Davis Shores is the stretch of Anastasia Island directly across the Bridge of Lions from the plaza, laid out on dredged and filled ground in the 1920s. That one fact — filled, low, and surrounded on three sides by water — explains most of what we end up doing in these kitchens.
Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year pass over this part of Florida, and the surge path into an appliance is the house wiring rather than the appliance itself. The signature is easy to recognise once you have seen it: every motor, element and compressor tests perfectly while the control board is dead or behaving erratically.
Extended outages do the same damage more slowly. After the multi-day power failures that followed Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024, the calls came in over weeks rather than days, as boards and inverter-driven compressors that had been stressed during the event finally gave out. An appliance that failed a fortnight after the power came back is not a coincidence, and it is worth telling us that when you book.
There is one limit we will not cross on this side of the bridge. An appliance that has stood in water is not a repair job. Silt and salt get into places no service procedure reaches, insulation holds moisture for months, and electronics that pass every test on the day can fail without warning later. Where we find it, we say so, write it up for the insurer, and stop — rather than sell you a board that is being fitted into a machine we cannot stand behind.
What is not in question on this side of the bridge is the air. Davis Shores sits between the Matanzas and Salt Run, and the aerosol load is high on any onshore wind. Salt is hygroscopic: it settles as an invisible film and then holds moisture against metal for hours after everything looks dry. The consequences are specific and repeatable.
| Component | What salt air does | How it presents |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator condenser | Aluminium fins corrode and pack with residue | Compressor runs longer, bills rise before temperatures do |
| Hood backdraft damper | Pivots gum with salt film and grease | Weak extraction, or cold outside air falling into the kitchen |
| Grill electrodes | Insulators crack and track to ground | Spark present, burner will not light |
| Stainless fascias and hinges | Surface pitting, then seized fasteners | Doors that no longer sit square |
| Outdoor and garage-sited equipment | Fastener heads shear on removal | A ten-minute job becomes a drill-and-retap job |
We come to island calls prepared for seized hardware. That is not a detail — it is the difference between a single visit and a return trip, and it is why we ask for the model and serial before we load the truck.
The original Davis Shores houses were built in the late 1920s and 1930s, and their kitchens were sized for a stove and an icebox. Nearly every professional range in this neighbourhood is sitting in an opening that has been modified, and the modifications tend to share the same faults: not enough clearance behind the appliance, a cabinet run that is a fraction out of level, and combustible surrounds closer than the installation instructions allow. Later additions and raised, post-flood rebuilds have their own version of the problem, where the kitchen was fitted into a footprint decided by the structure rather than by the equipment.
None of that is cosmetic. A range with restricted rear clearance runs its own controls hotter than they were designed for, and it will keep failing until the opening is corrected. When we find it, we measure and photograph it and put the numbers on the estimate, because replacing the part without changing the installation puts you back here in a year.
Davis Shores is the closest neighbourhood on the island to the city centre, and the only thing that moves our arrival window is a bridge opening. We schedule around them rather than promising through them.

Immediately east of the Bridge of Lions on Anastasia Island. Bridge openings are the only variable in the arrival window.
CommunitiesViking is a kitchen appliance manufacturer, and kitchen appliances are the whole of this trade: professional ranges and rangetops, wall and speed ovens, built-in refrigeration, wine storage, dishwashers, ventilation hoods and built-in outdoor grills.
We are not a heating or air-conditioning company. No furnaces, no air handlers, no heat pumps, no mini-splits and no conditioned-air ductwork — the only duct this bench works in is the extraction run above a kitchen hood.
Every address on this page is a kitchen call. If the fault is in the heating or the air conditioning, Davis Shores has contractors for that and we are not one of them.
Kitchen appliances only — no heating, air conditioning or conditioned-air ductwork.
A band, not a single number: the firm figure is written down after the appliance has been opened and measured, and a range is what you can act on before that. Parts and labour together, fitted, for Viking work in Davis Shores.
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat |
| Igniter or burner assembly | $210–$560 |
| Oven thermostat or heating element | $180–$610 |
| Control board or touch panel | $410–$980 |
| Refrigeration fan or defrost system | $240–$640 |
| Dishwasher pump or control | $240–$670 |
| Compressor or sealed-system repair | $970–$2,640 |
Flat $80 diagnostic covering the visit and the full diagnostic sequence, credited toward the repair once you approve the work.A written estimate comes before any part is ordered or any labour is billed. The whole published table. Worth fixing, or worth replacing.
The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve it. The repair itself lands in the bands published on this page — igniter or burner assembly $210–$560; oven thermostat or heating element $180–$610; control board or touch panel $410–$980; refrigeration fan or defrost system $240–$640; dishwasher pump or control $240–$670; compressor or sealed-system repair $970–$2,640 — so $80 to $2,640 covers the work described here, parts and labour together. The firm number is written down after the appliance has been measured, never before.
Yes. Davis Shores sits inside St. Johns County, within the 40 miles of St. Augustine this van works, and the ZIPs we attend there are 32080. Booking is by telephone or through the online page; there is no form on this site.
It changes the interval rather than the repair. Coastal air loads a condenser and eats at hinges, trim and exposed terminals faster than anything inland, so a coil cleaning that would be annual further west is not annual here, and a corroded switch or connector is checked before a board is blamed.
No. Viking here is the kitchen appliance manufacturer, not a heating trade — the work is ranges and rangetops, ovens, built-in refrigeration, wine storage, dishwashers, hoods and built-in grills. Furnaces, air handlers, heat pumps and conditioned-air ducting are a different trade altogether, and we say so on the telephone rather than charge $80 to find out.
Ring the bench and describe the symptom. A question that cannot be answered on the telephone is a question that needs a meter on the appliance, and we would rather say so than sell a visit to find out.

Two burners on the lanai grill would light and the rest would not. He found the ignition module corroded through from ocean air, replaced it along with the electrodes, and told me to keep the cover on between cooks. All burners fire.

The range works again after a new igniter, so the repair itself was sound enough. What I did not care for was how little got explained while it was going on. I had to ask twice what had actually failed and why it mattered.
