The griddle plate never came up to an even temperature. He calibrated the control, cleaned the underside of the plate and explained the limits of the module. Improved, though still not flat right across.

Clicking is the spark system working. The fault is between the spark and the gas, and the three usual answers are the three cheapest parts on the appliance.
Reviewed 2026-09-23
If it is clicking, the expensive half of the system is already proving itself. The module is firing, the electrode is receiving the pulse, and the appliance believes it is being asked for a flame. What has failed is the meeting between the spark and the gas, and that meeting has only a few ways to go wrong.
Lift the cap off and look at where it sits. Sealed burners have a locating feature — a notch, a pin, a flat — and a cap that was washed and dropped back on without engaging it will sit a millimetre proud and a few degrees out of rotation. The spark then jumps to the nearest metal instead of across the gas port, and it will go on doing that for years. Seat the cap properly, dry, and try again before anybody is called.
Two more free checks belong here. A cap or head still damp from the sink will spark to the water rather than the gas. And a port ring clogged with boil-over will carry gas nowhere near the electrode, which looks identical from standing height.
An electrode is a steel pin in a ceramic insulator, and it fails in two ways that are easy to tell apart with a torch. Carbon tracking shows as a dull grey or black path glazed across the ceramic; the spark follows that path to ground and never crosses the gap. A cracked insulator does the same thing invisibly. Neither is repairable and neither is dear.
This is the check that matters most within sight of the water. On Davis Shores and around Camachee Island, salt settles on everything an appliance leaves exposed, and the spark terminals under a rangetop are exposed by design. A corroded terminal, a green crust on the spade connector, or a lead that has gone brittle at the boot will all produce a weak, wandering spark that clicks perfectly and lights nothing.
A spark module fires each burner on its own channel. When one channel dies, one burner clicks and never lights while the rest behave normally — and because every burner clicks together on most of these appliances, an owner watching the wrong burner concludes the whole thing is broken. We test at the module output, per channel, rather than replacing it on the evidence of a noise.
All burners clicking when you turn one is normal on a shared module. It sounds alarming and it is how the appliance was built. Nothing needs doing, and we will say so on the telephone rather than book a visit to say it in person.
Ignition is the cheap end of this book, which is the point worth making before anybody starts worrying about a range. The band is published below with the diagnostic, and the two free checks above are the ones that most often make the band irrelevant.
If a burner lights and then drops out a second or two later, stop looking at ignition. That is flame supervision or a weak flame — gas pressure at the appliance, a partly blocked orifice, or a sensing circuit that is not seeing the flame it lit. It is a different measurement and a different conversation, and mixing the two is how a good igniter gets replaced for nothing.

A band, not a single number: the firm figure is written down after the appliance has been opened and measured, and a range is what you can act on before that. Parts and labour together, fitted, for the fault described here.
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat |
| Igniter or burner assembly | $210–$560 |
| Control board or touch panel | $410–$980 |
Flat $80 diagnostic covering the visit and the full diagnostic sequence, credited toward the repair once you approve the work.A written estimate comes before any part is ordered or any labour is billed. The whole published table. Worth fixing, or worth replacing.
The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve it. The repair itself lands in the bands published on this page — igniter or burner assembly $210–$560; control board or touch panel $410–$980 — so $80 to $980 covers the work described here, parts and labour together. The firm number is written down after the appliance has been measured, never before.
Igniter or burner assembly work runs $210–$560 fitted, which against a $6,500–$14,500 appliance is never the replacement argument. Clicking without a flame is usually an electrode, a cap seated a millimetre off its register, or one dead channel on the spark module — the cheapest outcomes in this book.
Flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair when you approve the work. If you decide not to go ahead, the diagnostic stands on its own and you keep the written estimate, including what was measured and what was ruled out.
90 days on our labour and 365 days on the parts we supply. Genuine OEM parts. A return visit on the same fault inside the term carries no second diagnostic and no trip charge.
Ring the bench and describe the symptom. A question that cannot be answered on the telephone is a question that needs a meter on the appliance, and we would rather say so than sell a visit to find out.

The oven door on the range sagged and heat spilled out of the top corner. He changed both hinges and the seal, then checked the door for square with a gauge instead of judging it by eye.

Simmer on the rangetop had turned into a full boil wherever the knob sat. He rebuilt the valve with an OEM kit instead of pushing a whole new cooking surface on us, and low heat holds steady where it is set now.
