Condensation kept forming inside the glass door every humid afternoon and pooling on the bottom shelf. He replaced a gasket that had gone hard at one corner and adjusted the door catch so it seats properly now.

Undercounter refrigeration is asked to do a hard job in a small box. A wine cabinet holds a narrow band — often a few degrees either side of a set point — while sitting in a sealed cavity with one air path in and out. When it stops holding, the cause is nearly always thermal rather than electronic, and the fix is frequently outside the appliance.
Undercounter units of this class are front-breathing. Air is drawn in through the toe grille, across the condenser, and pushed back out through the same face. Three things break that path, and all three are installation rather than failure:
| What we find | Effect | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Toe grille covered by a decorative panel | Condenser recirculates its own hot air | Restore a clear intake and exhaust |
| Unit pushed hard against the rear wall | Cabinet cavity holds heat | Set the specified rear clearance |
| Condenser packed with dust and pet hair | Loses heat rejection, runs continuously | Clean, then set a schedule |
A cabinet that used to hold 55 F and now sits at 62 F every August is usually telling you about the room, not the compressor. Ambient temperature is part of the specification: a unit rated for indoor use will not hold its set point in a St. Augustine garage or an unconditioned lanai in July, and no repair changes that. When that is the finding we write it down plainly instead of selling a part that will not help.
Two-zone cabinets separate the zones with an insulated divider, a damper, or a second evaporator, depending on the design. When the zones converge on one temperature, the question is whether the separation has failed mechanically or whether the whole cabinet has lost capacity and both zones have collapsed toward ambient. We log both zones with independent probes over a full night before we touch anything. An hour on site cannot tell those apart; a data log can.
Sweating glass is a humidity problem meeting a temperature difference, and this county supplies the humidity for free. Three causes in order of frequency: the door is not pulling fully closed against its gasket, the gasket has taken a set and no longer contacts at one corner, or the glass unit itself has lost its seal so moisture is condensing between the panes. The first two are adjustments and a gasket. The third means a door assembly, and we will tell you the price before you ask us to order it.
Doors on undercounter units are also opened at hip height by people carrying things, so hinge cams and closure springs wear faster than on a full-height cabinet. A door that no longer self-closes over the last inch will frost the back wall within a week.
If a sealed system is genuinely at fault, the work is regulated and our technicians hold EPA Section 608 certification for it. But before we go there we rule out the cheap causes of it runs all the time: a fan blade fouling a shroud, a compressor mount that has hardened so vibration transmits into the cabinetry, or a control thermistor reading low and calling for cooling that is not needed. Wine cabinets sit in living space, so a noise complaint is a real complaint. We identify the source with a stethoscope rather than by replacing the loudest-looking component.
In the historic housing stock around downtown and Davis Shores, undercounter units get built into openings that were joinery, not appliance bays. The common result is a cabinet with no rear clearance, no grille path, and a face frame that overlaps the door swing. Those units fail early and repeatedly. We measure the opening on the first visit and give you the numbers.

Unit ran constantly without ever reaching the set point, and the bottles on the top rack were noticeably warm. The condenser was choked with dust and pet hair; he cleaned it, then stayed to confirm it cycled off properly.

Both zones in the wine unit drifted to the same temperature, which defeats the point of having two. He found the divider damper stuck open and the upper sensor reading long, replaced the sensor and reset the zones.
