# Worth fixing, or worth replacing

Both halves of the sum are published on this site: what the repair costs, and what the machine that would replace it costs. This page does the division.

## Repair against replacement, appliance by appliance

The share below is the WORST repair an appliance can need, divided by the CHEAPEST machine that could replace it — appliance only, before delivery, installation or cabinetry. Under 25% the repair is not a decision. Under 50% it is a real judgement, and the age of the rest of the cabinet decides it. Above that, weigh it properly.

- Professional range or rangetop: repairs $180–$980; a comparable machine $6,500–$14,500; worst repair is 15% of the cheaper machine. Repair. The worst case is not close.
- Built-in refrigeration or a column: repairs $240–$2,640; a comparable machine $9,500–$17,500; worst repair is 28% of the cheaper machine. A judgement call at the top of the band.
- Built-in dishwasher: repairs $240–$980; a comparable machine $1,600–$3,200; worst repair is 61% of the cheaper machine. Weigh it properly before spending.

## What it costs

- Diagnostic visit: $80 flat. Flat $80 diagnostic covering the visit and the full diagnostic sequence, credited toward the repair once you approve the work.
- Igniter or burner assembly: $210–$560
- Oven thermostat or heating element: $180–$610
- Control board or touch panel: $410–$980
- Refrigeration fan or defrost system: $240–$640
- Dishwasher pump or control: $240–$670
- Compressor or sealed-system repair: $970–$2,640

Parts and labour together, fitted. A band and never a single number: the firm figure is written down after the appliance has been opened and measured.

### Replacing instead

- Professional range, the usual repair-or-replace comparison: $6,500–$14,500
- Built-in refrigerator or column: $9,500–$17,500
- Built-in dishwasher: $1,600–$3,200

A comparable Viking range, built-in refrigerator or dishwasher, appliance only — before delivery, installation or cabinetry. National appliance pricing, not Florida labour.

## Where we say do not spend the money

- An appliance that has stood in water. Silt reaches where no service procedure does, and we will not warrant work on one.
- A part out of production with nothing equivalent left in the supply chain.
- Damage to the cabinet or the opening itself — that is joinery, and parts only postpone the same call.
- Anything still inside its original manufacturer cover. Using that cover is almost always the better move.

## Questions people ask before they decide

### Is it worth fixing, or should I replace it?

Weigh the repair against the appliance that would replace it, not against nothing. A $970–$2,640 sealed-system job under a $9,500–$17,500 column is usually worth buying; the same money into a cabinet that has already had two unrelated faults is not. The $80 diagnostic buys that judgement in writing.

### What is the 50% rule, and does it hold here?

The rule says stop repairing once the quote passes half the price of a replacement. On a built-in it understates the replacement side, because the swap also disturbs the panel, the trim and often the cabinetry. We weigh it against the appliance figures this site publishes, then say plainly what the opening itself would add.

### What is the most expensive part to replace?

On refrigeration it is the sealed system — the compressor, and the recovery, evacuation and measured recharge around it — at $970–$2,640 fitted. On cooking equipment it is the control board or touch panel at $410–$980. Everything else this bench fits — igniters, sensors, fans, hinges and gaskets — sits below both.

### Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old built-in?

Sometimes, and the deciding fact is which part failed. A hinge, a fan or a control board or touch panel at $410–$980 is bolt-on work on a cabinet that is otherwise sound. A $970–$2,640 sealed-system repair on that same cabinet is buying a year, and we say so before you spend it.

### What do you charge per hour?

Nothing, by the hour. The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic and the repair is quoted as a job, parts and labour on separate lines, inside the published bands. An hourly meter rewards a slow morning; a banded quote you approved before anything was ordered does not.

### What moves a quote to the top of its band?

Access, the part, and what else the measurement finds. A built-in that has to come out of a tall cabinet costs more in labour than the same fault on a free-standing machine. A superseded part costs more than a stocked one. A second fault found with the panel off is quoted separately, never folded in.

### How long should this equipment last?

There is no honest single figure and we will not invent one. What the trade generally observes is that heavy cooking equipment outlives the sealed systems beside it, and that the installation decides more than the badge does: rear clearance, gas supply, and whether the condenser was ever cleaned.
