A working boatyard sits alongside the residences, the water is open on the exposed side, and there is no stand of trees between the basin and the buildings to break the aerosol carried off it. ## Why marina air is worse than beach air Salt aerosol concentration falls off with distance from open water, and it also depends on how much of that water is agitated. A basin with constant traffic, a haul-out yard and exposed fetch across the river keeps the air loaded most of the day, on winds from more directions than a straight ocean frontage gets. Add the yard's own airborne grit and the film that settles on metal here is abrasive as well as hygroscopic.
